The original is still available from Sunspel for $120.00 before shipping, duties and taxes. Tom Ford made the polo used in Quantum of Solace, inspired by the Sunspel version.
So what is so hard about a navy polo? Details:
Features wanted:
- Cotton mesh fabric
- Self facing fabric collar (not rib knit; the collar material looks the same as the rest of the shirt)
- No ribbing on sleeves
- Chest pocket
- 2 button placket with dark blue buttons
- No logos
Best Option: if you are willing to spend an extra 50 cents on blue buttons and are okay with a needle and thread, the Tailor Vintage Solid Cotton Polo comes very close; $25.00 at SaksOff5th but only medium and XL left in stock.
Other Really Good Options: The next two have a ribbed collars, but it is a very fine rib and they otherwise hit the mark.
Premium Double L® Polo, Hemmed w/Pocket Traditional Fit going for $25.00 on sale and the fabric closely matches the cotton mesh of the Sunspel.
Eddie Bauer’s Men’s Field Short-Sleeve Pocket Polo is on sale for $14.99; only size small left now.
Other Options:
J.Crew Broken-in Pocket Polo is priced at $39.50 (look for sales) and has all the style features. But the cotton fabric is more blown-up Bond at the end of QoS than Bond in Haiti.
The Brooks Brothers Red Fleece Solid Pique Polo has a ribbed collar and cuffs, but is currently on sale for $37.12.
The Arcteryx Captive Polo in Admiral is a more modern take on the polo, available at Amazon for $41.99 to $69.00.
Special Mention: JCPenny St. John’s Bay Polo at $12.99 on sale. Ribbed collar (I think), but may still be worth checking out?
